After more than a year on both drugs, I am finally tapering off Prednisone. Down to 10 mg daily from 40 mg. Have you had success on Azathioprine alone? I am concerned about relapse. Thank you for your comments.... WebOct 26, 2024 · Once I tapered down to about 10 mg, I got a distended belly likely caused by prednisone. This went away after about 3 weeks, once I tapered off of prednisone. I used 40 mg oral prednisone, 4.8 g oral mesalamine, and a mesalamine enema, and nothing seemed to help my Ulcerative Colitis. I ended up going off all medication and healing through diet.

Hi Mike, I have slowly tapered from 50mg to 10 mg so far. The side effects I experience are exhaustion, weakness and added aches and pains.
